VACS Impact accelerating grant (Deployment of Improved Amaranth Varieties for Enhanced Food and Nutrition Security in Africa)

2026

Overview

This project complements the previous Amaranth project that built supply pipeline through breeding, field trials and basic seed production by converting those outputs into farmer-level impact through formal variety release and active demand creation. The goals are to accelerate adoption of improved amaranth varieties among smallholder farmers, strengthen the grain amaranth variety pipeline through late-stage testing and registration in East Africa, and achieve the first official release of an amaranth variety in Uganda, and strengthen the breeding infrastructure for seedling nursery, irrigation, and seed storage across partner institutions to support accelerated variety release and farmer adoption.
