Grow Green Model: Market Gardens for Jobs, Nutrition, and Climate Resilience

2025 – 2026

Overview

Smallholder farmers, especially youth, in East, South and Western Africa face persistent challenges in food and nutrition security, market access, climate resilience, and economic opportunities.

Despite the potential of horticulture to improve nutrition and create jobs, it remains underdeveloped due to limited investment, lack of structured markets, and climate vulnerabilities.

The Grow Green Market Gardens initiative aims to establish community-led, environmentally sustainable market gardens that will serve as both a source of fresh, nutritious food and a platform for economic empowerment.

The methodology involves training local community members in agroecological farming techniques, establishing productive gardens, and creating market linkages to ensure the sustainability of the intervention.

The project will reach 10,500 youths and lead to the creation of 600 jobs.
