The World Vegetable Center genebank maintains a large collection of public domain germplasm for the current and future use of all humankind. We distribute seed samples of our germplasm accessions and advanced breeding lines worldwide.
Each year the Center distributes about 10,000 seed samples to researchers across the globe. Over the past four decades this has led to the release of hundreds of new vegetable varieties with particular impact in developing countries.
Our breeding programs address the major challenges facing vegetable farmers worldwide, from climate stress and emerging pests and diseases, to changing market demands.
We work with sweet and chili peppers, tomatoes, cucurbits, legumes, okra, amaranth, and other opportunity vegetables. By combining field breeding expertise with advanced technologies and participatory partnerships across public and private sectors, we accelerate the development of improved varieties that are relevant, widely adopted, and beneficial to farmers.
The World Vegetable Center (WorldVeg) is a non-profit autonomous international center for vegetable research and development. The Center has a unique mandate and a vision to contribute to healthier lives and more resilient livelihoods through greater diversity in what we grow and eat. Founded in 1971 as the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center (AVRDC), WorldVeg has an established presence in Asia and Africa, and an extensive network of partners around the world.
